New Insights on Dementia Risk Factors

Did you know that recent research has identified two new risk factors for developing dementia? According to 2024 findings, elevated LDL cholesterol levels in midlife and declining vision in late life have been newly linked to an increased dementia risk (The Lancet, 2024).

Elevated LDL cholesterol in midlife can lead to plaque build up in blood vessels, impacting blood flow to the brain and potentially accelerating cognitive decline. Similarly, late-life vision decline can lead to decreased mental stimulation and social isolation, both of which are now associated with a higher risk of dementia. These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring cholesterol early and addressing vision health as we age, providing actionable steps for a proactive approach to brain health.
